I think that the purpose of paying the £593 should be renamed from ‘divorce’ to ‘severing the marriage contract’. The umbrella of ‘divorce’ also applies to sorting out finances and also what happens with any children - if either are disputed the ‘divorce’ will cost a lot more than £593…

The law should support the idea that if people get married, then this shouldn’t be a free pass to go out of work and take a back seat with financial contribution, even if kids are involved, and that each party should be aware that the marriage could end and if they don’t protect themselves financially, then they could be left destitute… that way you would see less people getting married in the first place, and secondly, once married they wouldn’t be so quick to use children as an excuse to never work again
